Microneedling

Microneedling improves skin imperfections without surgery. It is performed by Dr. Phyllis J. Smith for patients in our Huntington, New York office, to transform the look and feel of damaged skin to smoother, cleaner healthier looking skin. It involves a small device that penetrates the skin creating controlled micro-dermal injuries. This stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin which in turn fills these imperfections, thus improving skin texture and firmness. Performed alone it will stimulate collagen. Dr. Smith will add cosmeceuticals, stems cells, or growth factors to further enhance cell rejuvenation.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

Microneedling has numerous qualitative benefits for your skin. It improves skin texture and firmness, reduces the appearance of acne scarring, minor scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, enlarged pores, melasma and hyperpigmentation. Microneedling can be used on all skin types and almost anywhere on the body, even around the eyes. It provides another valuable tool in improvement of acne scarring, stretch marks and wrinkles and our patients are pleased with their results.

How many treatments will I need?

That depends on the area and condition of the skin being treated. Many skin problems can be effectively treated with a series of 2 – 3  treatments repeated 4 – 6 weeks apart as needed, while others may need between 4 – 8  sessions 6 weeks apart as needed.

How soon will I see results?

Improvement is often seen within 1 – 2 weeks; however, achieving the desired results may take a couple of months depending upon the severity of the condition being treated. For 1 – 2 days after the treatment there may be some mild swelling and redness similar to a sunburn.

Is it safe?

There is relatively little risk when performed by skin care professionals using medical grade microneedling devices performed in a medical office. Microneedling is safe to use on all skin types and colors and there is little risk of infection.

CAUTION: “At home models” can present many safety risks. They include improper hygiene before, during and after the treatment takes place; the quality of the needle; the appropriate needle length; and the possibility of infection and/or scarring.

What are treatments like?

Before your treatment, our medical provider will evaluate your skin condition and your goals to determine the appropriate number of sessions. Prior to your treatment a numbing cream may be applied to the treatment area. Depending on the treatment area the doctor may choose from a variety of devices which include rollers with wheels of needles or a pen-like headpiece with clusters of tiny needles. Typically the tiny channels created during the treatment close within an hour. It is recommended to avoid sun exposure, retinol products, exfoliants, and waxing for one week prior to the treatment.

Microneedling treats all skin types and almost any part of the body. Schedule your consultation with Dr. Smith today.
